First AstraZeneca Seroquel Injury Trial To Start Monday

First AstraZeneca Seroquel Injury Trial To Start Monday – WSJ.com: “A New Jersey jury next week will be the first to hear accusations that AstraZeneca PLC’s (AZN, ASN.LN) blockbuster antipsychotic drug Seroquel caused diabetes, and that the drug maker failed to properly warn of the risks.

It will be the first public airing in one of the more high-profile sets of personal-injury lawsuits surrounding a major drug since Merck & Co.’s (MRK) Vioxx litigation in the mid-2000s. Seroquel is one of the 10 best selling drugs in the world, but it belongs to a class of therapies that has come under fire for safety risks and questionable marketing practices. Rival Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY), for instance, has shelled out more than $2.6 billion to settle product-liability claims and government probes of illegal marketing practices for its antipsychotic Zyprexa, and largely avoided courtroom trials.” [WSJ]
